The film takes place in the 1950s in Brighton. Policeman Tom carefully hides his relationship with the museum's curator Patrick, since same-sex relationships were punishable by law in those days. Tom marries teacher Marion without severing his connection with Patrick. Many decades later, the truth comes out, threatening to destroy the lives of all participants in the triangle.
