Johnny Berchtold, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Rob Lowe, Susan Gallagher, Soji Arai, Nick Payne, and others appear in the film. The film is based on Paul Tutonga's book of the same name, which tells the true story of Fielding's pet Marshall Gonker, who went missing in the wild.
The plot of this drama revolves around Fielding (Johnny Berchtold), a young man nearing the end of his college studies. He has not yet decided who he wants to be in the future; instead, he observes his friends as they enter adulthood. Nate is Fielding's best friend (Nick Payne). Meanwhile, the protagonist has always wanted a dog and decides that now is the time. Gonker, the dog he adopted from a shelter, is also looking for company, so he quickly becomes his new best friend, and they grow close.
When Fielding returns home with Gonker, he is confronted by his mother Ginny (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) and father John (Rob Lowe), who disapproves of his son's behaviour and lack of motivation. Fielding decides to take his dog for a walk on the Appalachian Trail one afternoon. However, having felt liberated, Gonker flees his master's grasp and pursues the fox. Fielding goes in search of him right away, but his efforts are futile, and Gonker never returns.
Fielding arrives home alone in a panic and informs his parents of the situation. As a result of their son's feelings for their four-legged friend, John and Ginny organise a search using their skills. When that doesn't work, John and Ginny seek the help of the community. They, like Fielding and the locals, return to the Appalachian Trail. As John and Fielding search for Gonker together, they become closer and better understand each other.
